"Im Endeffekt haben wir uns gegenseitig umgebracht"

Als Wikinger Einauge ist Mads Mikkelsen in "Walhalla Rising" eine Urgewalt. Wir sprachen mit ihm über wortlose Schauspielkunst und das Dasein als dünner Gorilla.

In "Walhalla Rising" spielen Sie eine der wohl extremsten Rollen ihrer Karriere: Ein Mann, der kein Wort sagt, der nur ein Auge hat, der anfangs ein Tier ist und später menschlich wird. Würden Sie selbst sagen, das war eine der heftigsten Rollen, die Sie je gespielt haben?

Für mich war es in anderer Hinsicht extrem. Ich hatte ja gerade "Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky" gedreht, einen Film, für den ich innerhalb von zwei Wochen Französisch, Englisch und Pianospielen lernen musste. Insofern habe ich mich durchaus darauf gefreut, keinen Text zu haben, weil das schön einfach klang. Aber natürlich war es das nicht. Wenn man einen Filmcharakter seiner Worte beraubt, ist das eine Sache, aber wenn man ihm auch seine Emotionen nimmt, seine Psyche, dann ist das schon sehr befremdlich. Deswegen habe ich irrsinnig viel geredet, wenn ich nach Hause kam. Der wirklich harte Teil waren aber die körperlichen Anforderungen. Die Kampfszenen waren äußerst brutal. Wir haben bei Nullgraden gedreht, ohne Kleidung am Leib, im Endeffekt haben wir uns gegenseitig umgebracht.

Wie viel mussten Sie für die Rolle trainieren?

Das Training war nicht darauf ausgerichtet, richtig viel Muskelmasse aufzubauen. Es geht da ja um Menschen, die Sklaven sind, die wirklich ungesundes Zeug essen, der Arnold-Schwarzenegger-Look wäre also falsch gewesen - mal abgesehen davon, dass ich den eh nicht hin bekommen hätte. Wir wollten dünne, ausgemergelte Körper. Aber natürlich mussten wir die Kampfszenen in den Bergen irgendwie meistern. Also habe ich mich einfach ein wenig zurückgehalten.

Sie haben mal gesagt, dass Sie für "Walhalla Rising" auf ihr Schauspieler-Einmaleins zurückgegriffen und eins der Basics, den Gorilla, das Tier, gespielt haben...

Ja, ein bisschen hab ich mich ja dafür geschämt, weil das in den 70ern so ein Schauspieler-Klischee war: "Was für ein Tier bist du?" Aber bei dieser Rolle kam ich nicht drumrum, weil Einauge nun mal ein Tier ist. Ein Gorilla. Wenn auch ein dünner Gorilla.

Vor Ihrer Schauspielkarriere waren professioneller Tänzer - hat Ihnen das bei der Choreografie der Kampfszenen geholfen?

Klar - solange ich nicht wie ein Tänzer aussehe, wenn ich kämpfe. (lacht) Die Leute sehen das nicht so gerne. Es sei denn, man heißt Gene Kelly. Aber wahrscheinlich kommt da mehr der Turner in mir raus. Als Kind habe ich immer Stunts gemacht. Ich bin von Dächern gesprungen oder von fahrenden Autos, dumme Sachen eben, frühes Jackass-Zeug. Aber das habe ich einfach schon immer geliebt. Mir war schon immer sehr bewusst, wie man durch die Luft fliegt und sich abrollt, damit man wieder sicher auf den Füßen landet. Das wichtige an einem Stunt ist ja auch, dass man aussieht, als würde man sich gerade tierisch weh tun.

Mads Mikkelsen is as One Eye in "Valhalla rising" an elemental force. We talked with him about the speechless way to act and the being as a thin gorilla.

You're playing one of the extremest roles of your career in "Valhalla rising": A man, who says no word, who has only one eye, who's an animal at the beginning and becomes a human later. Would you agree, that this was one of the heaviest roles you had played yet?


It was for me extrem in another point. I've played "Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky" before, which is a movie for which I had learned within two weeks French, English and playing the piano. So I was very happy, having no text lines, because that sounds very easy. But it wasn't of course. If you taking away the words from a film character is this one thing. But if you're taking away his emotions and his psyche, than this is very strange. That's why I have talked a lot, when I got home. The heavy part were the demands of the body. The fighting scenes were very brutal. We've played under zero degrees, without clothes and killed each other at the end.

How much you had trained for this role?

I haven't trained to get much muscles. This movie is about humans, who are slaves, who are eating not healthy stuff. So the Arnold-Schwarzenegger-look would be false - and I never would get that look anyway. We wanted thin, haggard bodies. But we had to get through the fighting scenes in the mountains of course. So I held off a little bit.

You've said once, that you remembered your acting basics for "Valhalla rising" and one of this you have played: the gorilla, the animal …


Yes. And I was a little bit ashamed of, because that was a stereotype of actors in the 70ies: "What an animal are you?" But I couldn't change it with this role, because One Eye is an animal. A gorilla. Even though a thin gorilla.

You were a professional dancer before your acting career. Does that had helped you with the fighting scenes?

Of course - if I'm not looking like a dancer, while I'm fighting. (laughs) The people don't like to see that. Even though your name is Gene Kelly. But I suppose it's more the gymnast, I was. When I was a child I've made a lot of stunts. I've jumped from the roofs or from driving cars. Stupid things, early Jackass-stuff. But I've always loved that. I've always known, how to fly through the air and how to roll off, to get on your feet again. The importance of a stunt is, that it looks like, that you're hurting yourself very much at this moment.
